About this Knowledge Package
This knowledge package focuses on the basic science of the spine and spine physiotherapy.
Comprehensively covering the fundamentals of spine physiology, assessment and treatment outcomes, this packages contains seven lectures. For thorough physiological knowledge, there are individual lectures on spinal biomechanics, the aging process of the spine, spinal pain and spinal balance. Physical and neurological assessment of patients with spinal disorders have a lecture each devoted to them. Finally, there’s a lecture on the predictors of treatment outcome.
This spine surgery course is one of four knowledge packages in the Spine Physiotherapy Specialist Certificate. It includes downloadable reference materials including book chapters and journal articles from the European Spine Journal, Spine, the Spine Journal etc.
Learning Objectives
- To understand spinal biomechanics and kinematics of the spine, and the roles of disc facet joints, tendons and muscles
- To understand pathobiology and process of the aging spine
- To understand pain pathways, the bio-psycho-social pain model and psychological symptoms in patients with chronic pain
- To understand the basic concepts of spinal balance and alignment, measurement of pelvic parameters, and the importance of spinal alignment
- To understand and measure patient outcomes
- To recognise relevant clinical findings from patient history and clinical examination
- To understand the epidemiology, and anatomic & somatotopic background of neurological pathology, and to apply a diagnostic algorithm.
Target Groups
Physiotherapists
supporting a spine surgery service
Trainee Physiotherapists
seeking to support their spine-specific training
Lectures included in this Knowledge Package
Spinal Biomechanics
This spine surgery lecture covers spinal biomechanics under normal physiological conditions. It covers the fundamental spinal biomechanics topics – from strength and metabolism to vertebra kinematics and muscle stabilisation.
Age-Related Changes of the Spine
This spine lecture discusses age-related changes of the spine. Understand pathobiology of the aging of the spine and obtain knowledge about the process of the aging of particular elements of the spine.
Pathways to Spinal Pain
This lecture is about the Pathways to Spinal Pain. It covers the definition of spinal pain, pathways and types and aetiology of pain and also details the transmission and perception of pain, and the effect of biopsychosocial factors.
Spinal Balance
This spine lecture is about spinal balance, beginning with the basics of what is defined as spinal balance, and an explanation of the terms “sagittal” and “coronal balance”. The calculation of pelvic incidence, pelvic tilt and sacral slope is explained, followed by an explanation of the pathological imbalance states, as well as the compensatory mechanisms the body uses to remain in balance.
Predictors of Treatment Outcome
This lecture covers the predictors of treatment outcome in spine surgery. It outlines the factors that predict a satisfactory outcome of spinal surgical treatment, how the outcome is measured and the affecting potential factors.
History and Physical Assessment
In this spine surgery lecture, the history and physical assessment of spinal disorders is discussed. There is a focus on back pain as this is the most common complaint. This is discussed with special reference to red flags denoting serious underlying problems, which if missed would cause major harm to the patient. In addition, the special tests which aid in diagnosis are described.
Neurological Assessment
In this spine lecture, Dr Armin Curt discusses the neurological assessment of the spinal cord. The anatomy of the spinal column and the various tracts present are covered. The disorders which can affect the spinal cord, both acute and chronic, are outlined, and the strategy to make an accurate assessment in an acute setting is explained. The clinical tests which can help study each tract are explained in a systematic manner. Finally, the differential diagnosis and various disorders affecting the cord are outlined.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is an eccElearning Knowledge Package, and who are they for?
A: Knowledge Packages are bundles of 3-6 Spine Lectures from the eccElearning Spine Surgery Education Programme. Each Lecture includes the Lecture Presentation, Additional Learning Resources, Pre-Learning Quiz and Lecture Assessment. Each Lecture is viewed online in video format and lasts from 20-45 minutes. The Lectures contain relevant additional learning resources (book chapters, research papers, surgical videos, master lecture videos, case reports, review articles, etc.), which are presented in context and viewable immediately for your convenience.
Knowledge Packages are typically for Spine Fellows, Residents and experienced Spine Surgeons. Some Knowledge Packages are beneficial for other Medical or Non-Surgical Professionals, such as Radiologists or Physiotherapists.
Knowledge Packages make up our Specialist Certificates, and Specialist Certificates make up our full Spine Surgery Diploma. Students can therefore work their way towards full qualifications in Spine Surgery in affordable chunks. Alternatively, Knowledge Packages are a great way for experienced Spine Surgeons to augment their knowledge with the most up-to-date education in specific spine topics.
Q: What does a Knowledge Package include?
A: Each Knowledge Package is a bundle of 3-6 Spine Lectures from the eccElearning Spine Surgery Education Programme. They contain all relevant Lecture Presentations, compulsory downloadable reference material (such as journal articles and book chapters), pre- and post- learning assessments and CME Credits. You will have access to all these materials for 12 months.
Q: Who recognises the eccElearning Lectures and Packages?
A: All eccElearning Lectures are CME accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME), of the Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes (UEMS). EACCME credits can be converted into an equivalent number of American Medical Association PRA Category 1 Credits, so you can be sure the qualification is recognised internationally. eccElearning is also endorsed by the European Spine Journal.
Q: Is there a final exam?
A: There is no final exam for Knowledge Packages. However, if you purchase all Knowledge Packages within a Specialist Certificate, you will need to complete a 1-hour multiple-choice question Examination to be awarded that Specialist Certificate.
Q: Is there a time limit for completing a Knowledge Package?
A: Yes, you have a study period of 12 Months to complete a Knowledge Package. However, a Knowledge Package is typically completed successfully by students within 2-3 weeks of starting.
