What you will cover in this lecture
This lecture discusses adjacent segment pathology arising from cervical fusion for degenerative disc disease. The epidemiological evidence is discussed, comparing the fused spine with the natural history of disease itself. The lecture addresses patient selection for cervical TDR, and disc replacement is compared with fusion in relevance to clinical data. The ideal artificial disc performance criteria are discussed along with anatomical considerations which need to be respected to enable optimal placement of the prosthesis. The surgical technique is described and treatment strategies are suggested to tackle the issue of adjacent segment pathology.
