What you will cover in this lecture

The lecture begins with a discussion of the incidence of childhood cancers in general before focusing on spinal tumours. The classification and presentation of tumours of the brain and spinal cord is covered. The lecture moves on to discuss the process of diagnosis which many patients go through and the problems relating to the time from symptom onset to diagnosis. The author then describes work that has been done to improve the symptom interval for patients - called the HEADSMART campaign. Finally, a number of clinical cases are presented and discussed with respect to delays in diagnosis.

Learning Objectives

  1. To consider the impact of age growth and development upon risk of cancers in early life.
  2. To consider the impact of multiple delays in management of spinal tumours – who has responsibility?
