What you will cover in this lecture
This spine surgery lecture covers preoperative assessment of spine surgery patients. Core messages: The patient needs the preoperative assessment to reduce anxiety and fear; the anaesthesiologist to correctly evaluate the risks and anticipate possible complications. The aging population leads to an increasing number of elective spinal surgery in elderly patients. Spinal cord injury can also affect other organ systems. Scoliosis might cause restrictive pulmonary disease leading to a reduced PaO2 with normal PaCO2. This can further progress and lead to irreversible pulmonary hypertension and cor pulmonale. Duchenne muscular dystropy requires particular attention to cardiac and pulmonary complications and proper evaluation and monitoring are mandatory. Tumour surgery often requires thorough blood management and even transfusions. Spinal shock starts immediately after injury lasting up to 3 weeks. Post-traumatic autonomic dysreflexia may be present after 3-6 weeks following the spinal cord injury. Pre-existing drug therapy has to be adapted to the individual perioperative situation.

A: CME stands for Continuing Medical Education. You are awarded CME Credits for undertaking an approved course of medical education. Each Lecture that you complete successfully adds to your CME Credits total. All Lectures provided by eccElearning are accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME), of the Union Européenne des Médecins Spécialistes (UEMS). You can print out your Certificate of CME Credits after the completion of any Course or Lecture.
Q: What do I do if I fail a Lecture Assessment?
A: You are permitted to retake a Lecture Assessment up to two times. The Lecture Assessment will be made available to you again 14 days after a failed attempt. If you’ve failed the Lecture Assessment three times, please get in contact with us to discuss your options.
