Lecture: Scheuermann’s Kyphosis: Surgical Complications
This spine surgery lecture looks at the corrective surgery performed for the correction of Scheuermann’s kyphosis. The lecture begins with a discussion of the possible approaches, the kinds of osteotomies required and how to maintain the correction while fusion is occurring. The lecture includes a look at the entire spectrum of complications occurring during surgery, early post operative and late post op, paying special attention to the development of proximal and distal junctional kyphosis. The steps required for correct selection of fixation levels are presented, along with the complications which one can face if these are not respected. Finally, the dangers of over-correcting the deformity are considered, along with the extent of undercorrection which is best tolerated by the patient.
