This CME-accredited short spine course gives a comprehensive overview of often encountered questions related to osteoporosis of the spine, mostly in postmenopausal women, and more specifically about osteoporotic vertebral body fractures in the clinical day-to-day practice, enabling the clinician to initiate the best possible treatment.

This course allows the surgeon, family practioner, general internist, rheumatologist, gynecologist, neurologist and others to make a proper diagnosis on the base of an in-depth clinical examination and imaging procedures and to inform the patients and their families accurately about the prognosis and the risks of the their treatment choice.

The learning objectives of this course are:

  • Know the pathobiology and process of aging of particular elements of the spine.
  • Know the epidemiology, pathogenesis and risk factors of osteoporotic spine fractures, the different treatment options, prevention of possible complications, and suggested treatment algorithms for patient selection.
  • Acquire basic knowledge of osteopathies, and be able to distinguish between bone forming and bone loss conditions.
  • Know the complications which might arise in the surgical treatment of the osteoporotic spine, the reasons and patterns of failure, along with the strategies and steps to improve the survival of fixations.
